THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF IMPLICIT-STATISTICAL LEARNING APTITUDE TO IMPLICIT SECOND-LANGUAGE KNOWLEDGE

چکیده
Abstract This study addresses the role of domain-general mechanisms in second-language learning and knowledge using an individual differences approach. We examine predictive validity implicit-statistical aptitude for implicit knowledge. Participants ( n = 131) completed a battery four measures nine grammar tests. Structural equation modeling revealed that only alternating serial reaction time task (a measure aptitude) significantly predicted learners’ performance on timed, accuracy-based language tests, but not their reaction-time measures. These results inform ongoing debates about nature SLA: they lend support to tests as Auditory visual statistical were correlated with medium strength, while remaining correlated, highlighting multicomponential corresponding need multitest approach assess its different facets.

Implicit and explicit contributions to statistical learning.
Statistical learning allows learners to detect regularities in the environment and appears to emerge automatically as a consequence of experience. Statistical learning paradigms bear many similarities to those of artificial grammar learning and other types of implicit learning. However, whether learning effects in statistical learning tasks are driven by implicit knowledge has not been thorough...
متن کاملPrior Linguistic Knowledge Influences Implicit Language Learning
We report three experiments that explore the effect of prior linguistic knowledge on implicit language learning. Native speakers of English and native speakers of Cantonese participated in implicit learning (IL) experiments that involved different learning materials. In Experiment 1, both participant groups showed evidence of learning a mapping between articles and noun animacy. In Experiment 2...

Acquiring spoken language involves implicitly learning the statistical relations among language units. In this chapter, we review recent behavioral and neurophysiological findings from our research group that illuminate the relation of this type of ‘implicit statistical learning’ (ISL) to language acquisition. First, we review evidence illustrating that ISL mechanisms enable the learner to pred...

متن کاملSemantic Implicit Learning in Language
Previous studies of semantic implicit learning in language have only examined learning grammatical form-meaning connections where learning could have been supported by prior linguistic knowledge. Also, these studies assessed awareness by verbal report, which is arguably not the most reliable measure. Here we target the domain of verb meaning, specifically semantic preferences of novel verbs (e....
